Jason Holland may be new to the role of Community Connector at Active Southland - but he is no stranger to bringing people together. 

In this role he will support tamariki and rangatahi by creating opportunities to be more active and stay connected. 

His job will span from South Invercargill to Mataura and Waiau – areas identified as geographic priority communities. 

Though new in the role, he has already hit the ground running, supporting youth programmes like alternative education and a nine-week programme at Aurora.  

Jason admits he is not stepping into the role with all the answers.  

He’s focused on listening, connecting and helping amplify what is already working in communities. 

Jason brings not only energy and enthusiasm to Active Southland, but also a strategic mindset, looking at how community groups can work together more effectively and build sustainable momentum. 

“People are doing amazing things, but often in isolation,” he says. 

“My job is to bring people together – making sure everyone knows what is out there and creating more opportunities for connection.” 

Jason has spent five years as General Manager at Y Southland and has also worked closely with ISSN Alternative Education.  

As the former owner of Adventure Southland, Jason is passionate about the outdoors and creating experiences that encourage rangatahi to push their own boundaries, explore new possibilities, and grow through challenge. 

With more than 20 years of experience in the Positive Youth Development sector, he has consistently dedicated his career to helping young people build confidence, resilience, and leadership skills. 

“It’s not about skill - it's about having the chance to try. That’s where confidence begins,” he says. 

When he’s not working, Jason is an active relaxer, you’ll find him outdoors, hiking, gold panning and fishing. 

“Basically, anything to escape four walls.” 

He has recently bought a caravan and plans to explore places all over the South Island with his wife Justine and dog, Max.
