We’re pleased to welcome Kyla Herrick to Active Southland’s Tōku Oranga team as a Health Coach.
Based at Invercargill Medical Centre, she is excited to support our community on their health journeys.
Kyla has a background in sport and exercise science and brings some excellent coaching expertise.
She was most recently employed as a rehabilitation coach and wellbeing advisor in Dunedin, specialising in work injuries, spinal cord and brain injuries, chronic conditions and intellectual disabilities.
Kyla has also led group and aqua fitness classes.
Inspired by her mentor and former lecturer, Kyla is clear she wants to work in the public health sector.
She has a passion for helping people to enjoy a better quality of life, believing strongly in the benefits of using physical activity to help tāngata whaiora (clients) reach their desired health outcomes, through personalised coaching and support.
She admits there’s a lot to learn in her new role but is looking forward to learning on the job and leaning into her experienced colleagues for advice.
Since growing up in Lumsden, Kyla studied and worked in Dunedin and is now happy to be in Invercargill – enjoying its ample space and easy-going pace of life.
Exercise, training and staying healthy are important to Kyla, who trains and participates in Hyrox (running and functional fitness racing) competitions.
She also enjoys tramping, camping, 4-wheel driving and spending time with family, including visiting her three nieces in Australia.
Kyla says overall wellbeing doesn’t have to be fancy or complicated and can be achieved in smaller steps.
“Social media can make health and wellbeing seem so overwhelming, there’s so much information and a lot of it is conflicting. I’d like people to know that well-being can be simple, and it’s about understanding your health needs and finding what works best for you.”
