New communications advisor joins the team at Active Southland

Every job Valu Maka has undertaken has revolved around people.

As the new Healthy Families Invercargill and Active Southland communications advisor, it will be no different.

She has stepped into the role with a Diploma in Journalism, a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Media, Film and Communications, and a couple of years’ experience as a community reporter in Southland.

Aside from her background in media and communications, she has dabbled in a range of professions including customer service, a crew member in a quick restaurant franchise, and recently finished up working as an optical assistant.

She is entering the communications field after a two-year hiatus from journalism and looks forward to doing what she has always been passionate about — storytelling.

“I have always enjoyed connecting with people and hearing their stories and this is what naturally drew me to the journalism field.

“Taking on this job I’m looking forward to listening, chatting and writing again.’’

Meeting the Healthy Families Invercargill team and its innovators, she cannot wait to showcase the several projects and initiatives they all individually and collectively are working on.

“They are all busy behind the scenes, meeting different needs in the community and doing amazing things, so I’m looking forward to helping capture and promote the many things they are all doing out there.”

Her favourite stories to report on often involve raising awareness or highlighting positive changes within the community, and she believes the role would provide plenty of opportunities for her to do that.

Outside of her passion for writing Valu enjoys spending plenty of time with her whānau and friends.

Her other favourite pastimes include exploring different spots in Southland. With some of her most recent adventures leading her to Greenpoint Domain, the Fortrose Cliffs, and Omaui.

“We live in such a beautiful place, and I’d encourage people to explore it a little bit more.’’
